Healing Pathways Community Therapy Walks Frequently Asked Questions

What are Healing Path Community Therapy Walks?
Healing Path Community Therapy Walks are a community initiative offering a supportive and encouraging space for emotional and mental well-being. These walks are not medical or clinical therapy sessions but provide guided discussions, coping strategies, and connection with others in a peaceful, natural setting.

How much do the therapy walks cost?
The walks are free and open to the public. Donations are welcome to help us expand our reach and support more individuals.

Where are the walks located?
We serve Northern Illinois, including Chicago, surrounding suburbs, and Northwest Indiana. For security reasons, exact locations are only shared with those who complete the registration process and are approved.

How strenuous are the walks, and how long do they last?
Walks typically last between 45 to 60 minutes and vary depending on the facilitator. Some may include shorter walks followed by group discussions. All walks are low-impact and non-strenuous, focusing on accessibility and comfort.

What topics are covered during the walks?
Topics vary per month (check our Facebook page)  and focus on emotional wellness, personal growth, stress management, and spiritual encouragement.

Who leads the therapy walks?
Walks are led by trained professionals, including mental health therapists, counselors, social workers, pastors, and other qualified individuals. While they offer valuable insights, they do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions during the walks.

Is this a replacement for traditional therapy?
No. These walks are not a substitute for professional mental health treatment. They offer encouragement, coping tools, and community support. We encourage participants needing individualized care to seek licensed professionals.

Can I receive private therapy from a facilitator?
Healing Pathways does not offer direct therapy services. However, facilitators may have private practices and can choose to share their contact information independently. Any resulting therapeutic relationship is outside the scope of Healing Pathways.

What should I expect during a walk?

  • A 45–60-minute group walk in a nature setting

  • Guided discussions on a weekly wellness topic

  • A confidential and supportive community

  • Practical tools shared by facilitators

  • The benefits of nature and light physical activity

How do I sign up?
All participants must register in advance. Once approved, you’ll receive walk location details and other relevant information.

Are there age restrictions?
Yes. Participants must be 18 or older unless otherwise specified. If a walk is tailored for teens or younger participants, it will be clearly noted in the event description.

Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes. A waiver must be signed acknowledging that Healing Pathways does not provide medical treatment and that participation is voluntary. The waiver also releases the organization and its volunteers from liability.

What should I bring?

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Water for hydration

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

  • A notebook or journal (optional)

What if I have a medical condition or mental health concern?
Please consult a healthcare provider before participating if you have any medical or mental health conditions. Participants are responsible for their own physical and emotional well-being.

What if I feel triggered during the walk?
While our goal is to create an uplifting environment, sensitive topics may arise. If you feel overwhelmed:

  • Take a break or step away as needed

  • Speak with a facilitator if you'd like support

  • Share only what you feel comfortable sharing

  • Seek professional care if further support is needed

Can I bring a friend?
Yes! Friends, family, or colleagues are welcome. Each person must register individually and sign the required waiver.

Are walks ever canceled due to weather?
Walks are held at 10 AM on Saturdays and occur rain or shine unless there’s severe weather (e.g., thunderstorms, extreme heat, or heavy snow). If a walk is canceled, participants will be notified via email or text.

How can I become a volunteer therapist?
We welcome licensed therapists, counselors, social workers, pastors, and other professionals to join us as facilitators. Attend an information session to learn more. Volunteers must:

  • Understand the walks are community-focused, not clinical therapy

  • Offer general tools, not individual diagnoses or treatment

  • Sign a volunteer waiver

  • Optionally share private practice info for continued services outside Healing Pathways
